Ready, steady, MONTAGE!

Photo montage is a fun and interesting form of photography to teach in all levels of high school.

I teach units on Photomontage in Year 9 and Year 10 PDM focusing on the montage practice of Man Ray and David Hockney (respectively).

In Year 9 students are introduced to this art from by creating composite collage images out of old magazines. Students are encouraged to create images which incorporate juxtaposition, the unexpected and play on scale and proportion.
(actual student works shown)

Later they create photograms using objects which symbolise a child hood memory to create a series of images which form a visual narrative.

Digital photo montages are also a part of this unit in the use of Photoshop. A ready made open photoshop image comprising of 12 black & white houses is given to students (they save it on their DER laptops).

Original unedited image given to students

Using the skills they have gained in class, students are to add 3 extra houses to the file (manipulating them to the same style as the original houses) and rearrange, rescale, manipulate, alter, warp etc the individual layers to become an entirely new and unique digital montage.

Below are examples from my year 9 class this year.

Next I think I will print the montages on art quality paper and get my students to colour them using watercolours and/or pencils for the school art exhibition!

 PHOTOMONTAGE YR 10

In Year 10 students create their own David Hockney inspired photo montage portrait or "Joiner".

This concept of Hockney's of showing a subject and/or scene from multiple perspective is borrowed from the Cubist artists or early 20th century art - Picasso and Braques works are looked at.

Some other images and artists I have found which could be good to look at are:

1. John Stezaker

 2. Photographic Specimens by Michael Mapes
